Drywall Calculator

Drywall Calculator

Estimate material needed for walls and ceiling.

Check to add ceiling area

Length (ft or m)
Width (ft or m)
Wall height (ft or m)
Recommended 5–15%
(Doesn't affect quantity)
Default: 21 ft² or 1.95 m² per door
Default: 15 ft² or 1.39 m² per window
Optional: Total area(s) to subtract.
Default: 32 screws per 4x8 sheet

About Drywall Material Calculation

The **Drywall Calculator** estimates the quantity of materials needed by determining the total area of the walls and ceiling (if selected), subtracting the area of all openings (doors, windows, custom cutouts), and applying a **waste factor** for cuts and mistakes. This net area is then used to estimate the number of sheets, screws, joint compound, and tape required.

Key Formulas & Estimates

$$\text{Sheets Needed} = \left( \frac{\text{Total Area} - \text{Openings Area}}{\text{Sheet Area}} \right) \times \left( 1 + \frac{\text{Waste} \%}{100} \right)$$ (Result is rounded up to the nearest whole sheet).

Drywall Tips for Best Results

Sheet Layout & Waste

  • **Minimize Seams:** Use the longest possible sheet size (10' or 12') for long walls and ceilings to reduce the number of seams that need mudding and sanding.
  • **Stagger Joints:** Ensure vertical joints don't line up between rows for walls or ceilings to maximize strength and minimize cracking.
  • **Recommended Waste:** Use a **10% waste factor** for average rooms; increase to 15% for complex rooms (e.g., many angles or openings).

Fasteners and Finish

  • **Screw Placement:** Drive screws slightly below the surface (dimpling) without breaking the paper facing.
  • **Finish Levels:** A Level 4 finish is standard for paint. Level 5 requires a thin skim coat over the entire surface for a truly smooth look.
  • **Corner Beads:** Don't forget metal or vinyl corner beads for all outside corners. The calculator does not estimate these.
