Understanding Pipe Volume Calculation
The volume of a pipe is calculated using the formula for the volume of a cylinder. This helps determine fluid retention, flushing requirements, and testing volumes in piping systems.
Volumetric Formula
The formula is: $$V_{ft^3} = \pi \cdot r^2 \cdot L$$
- Vft³: Volume in cubic feet.
- r: Internal radius (ft) = Diameter (in) ÷ 24.
- L: Length (ft).
Capacity Conversion
To convert volume to gallons: $$\text{Capacity (gal)} = V_{ft^3} \times 7.48052$$
Important:
Use the internal diameter (ID) — not nominal or outside diameter — to ensure accurate fluid capacity results.
