Why Calculate Square Yards?
While construction and room sizing often use **square feet (sq ft)**, many bulky materials like **carpet, linoleum, concrete, and cubic yard soil/mulch** are priced or ordered using **square yards (sq yds)**. It is essential to convert the room or area dimensions correctly to ensure accurate purchasing and budgeting.
The Conversion Rule
- A yard is 3 feet.
- A square yard is 1 yard long by 1 yard wide.
- Therefore, a square yard is $\mathbf{3 \text{ ft} \times 3 \text{ ft}} = \mathbf{9 \text{ square feet}}$.
- **Formula:** $\text{Area (Sq Yds)} = \text{Area (Sq Ft)} / 9$
Note on Waste Allowance
The waste allowance is critical for materials like carpet, which come on rolls. It accounts for trimming, pattern matching, and filling oddly shaped areas. Always confirm the recommended waste percentage with your material supplier or installer.
