Pond Liner & Volume Calculator 🐟

Estimate the liner size and total water capacity for a rectangular pond.

Longest dimension of the pond.

Shortest dimension of the pond.

Maximum vertical depth of the excavation.

Liner slack needed for edges/anchoring (typ. 1.5 - 2 ft).

Understanding Pond Calculations

Pond construction requires two primary calculations: determining the size of the liner material and calculating the total water volume for stocking fish, sizing filtration, and maintenance.

1. Required Liner Size

The liner calculation must account for the pond’s length and width plus enough material for the depth and overlap:

Liner Dimension = Pond Dimension + (2 × Depth) + (2 × Overlap)

2. Water Volume (Capacity)

The water volume (V) is calculated as:

V (ft³) = Length × Width × Depth
Gallons = V × 7.48052

Note on Irregular Shapes:

This calculator assumes a simple rectangular pond with vertical sides. For irregular shapes or sloped sides, add extra allowance for both liner size and water capacity.
